It’s Summertime and the Living is Cheesy
June 4 is National Cheese Day! Celebrate by enjoying cheese in one of its many forms and flavors… We asked St. Peter Food Co-op & Deli Cheese Buyer Jim Vonderharr to share his top five summer cheeses—you can find them all at the Co-op!
1. Metz’s Hart-Land Cheese Curds
Crafted in Rushford, MN, these squeaky-fresh curds are an all-time Co-op favorite. Available in Plain, Dill, Chipotle and Roasted Garlic/Herb flavors & currently on sale for $3.99/lb (that’s a savings of $2.50)!
2. Bongards American Single Slices
Another local favorite from Bongards, MN, these slices are perfect as a topping for your perfectly grilled burgers. On sale now for $1.00 off (sale price $2.99/lb; reg. 3.99/lb).
3. St. Helga’s European Style Swiss
This cheese is born in Wisconsin and then aged in the sandstone Caves of Faribault (Faribault, MN). The cave aging gives this cheese a full bodied, nutty flavor that can enhance the flavor boost of your regular Baby Swiss.
4. Deer Creek The Robin
This buttery, handmade original Colby cheese was named for the Wisconsin State Bird. It’s the perfect compliment to cured meats on an appetizer platter and also melts well on burgers or in a gooey mac and cheese.
5. Rochdale Farms Driftless Limited Edition
Made with a 50/50 blend of hand-milked cow and goat milk on the Amish farms of Wisconsin’s Driftless Area, this cheese is aged 2 years for a nutty and sweet flavor with a slight tangy finish.
Luckily, there’s plenty of cheese to go around. If you’re searching for the perfect cheese for a recipe, dish, or party, visit the Co-op and ask to speak with Jim!
